Years of rifle hunting Oregon’s imposing coast range have taught me a lot–especially what I do and don’t need in a rifle. What I do need: A high-performance, long-range capable rifle that can handle the rugged terrain and natural elements that the Pacific Northwest is known for. What I don’t need: Any extra weight, because the coast range is uphill both ways. There are a handful of production rifles out there that would do themselves proud in the Pacific Northwest, but the one I settled on for my next hunt is the Springfield Model 2020 Waypoint in 6.5 PRC.

The Springfield Model 2020 Waypoint is a sleek, modern bolt-action rifle that perfectly blends what I need in the woods with a few traits it has borrowed from the precision rifle shooting medium–like a carbon fiber stock, a TriggerTech Field trigger, and a few other out-of-the-box upgrades. The result is a lightweight, woods-ready rifle that’s built for hunters who find themselves in rugged environments and need ultimate performance from their firearm.

Of course, you know the name Springfield for a lot of other reasons. Namely, the company’s legendary M1A and its incredibly-popular selection of handguns. The Model 2020 Waypoint is a new direction for Springfield and is a high-end production rifle that’ll be at home whether I’m hunting elk or reaching out and ringing steel at long range. No after-market additions required, short of the Leupold riflescope I’ve affixed to the top of it.

I chose to mount one of our award-winning VX-6HD’s–which are proudly designed, machined, and assembled right here in our Beaverton, Ore., factory–to an American-made, custom-grade rifle. Springfield is building the Model 2020 Waypoint in the United States, which, much like our Leupold riflescopes, I can appreciate greatly. I look forward to having this setup at my side for many hunts to come.

HOW TO CLEAN A RIFLESCOPE

In this article, we'll break down when and how to clean your riflescope properly to help make sure it performs at the highest level.

Most dust and debris can be removed by blowing the optic with compressed dry air. A portable blower like the Giottos Rocket Air Blaster makes a great addition to your field kit.
