RANGEFINDER EDUCATION
YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED.
New to the RX-5000 rangefinder, Long Range mode enables ranging of up to 5,000 yards (or 3 miles). To ensure that Long Range Mode works properly, it's important to keep the rangefinder completely still while ranging which can be achieved by used the included saddle mount with a tripod. Once the device is locked into the saddle, you can press "Remote Fire" (on the Range Results section of the Control App) to range a distant target. Although the rangefinder can be triggered using its power button, using the Control App will further enhance stability and accuracy.
It's crucial to calibrate the digital compass inside the rangefinder for precise pin placement and accurate waypoint values. The digital compass can be influenced by changes in magnetic fields (nearby metal objects, binocular harness magnets, or environmental conditions). To maintain accuracy, you must initiate calibration through the Leupold Control App on every outing. To calibrate your device, access the Settings page, click the calibrate button, and follow the on-screen instructions. Once calibration is complete, the status bar will show 100%, signifying that the rangefinder is ready for use.
To remotely view and adjust your rangefinder’s settings, pair your rangefinder with the Leupold Control App, then navigate to the Settings page (wrench icon at the bottom) and access the Product Settings submenu. This menu will only appear when your rangefinder is connected to the app. To modify a setting, simply tap its corresponding value.
Recalibrate the compass in your RX-5000 TBR/W. While digital compasses are pre-calibrated, they require recalibration when used in new locations, after significant temperature changes, or when the device’s battery compartment is opened. During recalibration, be sure to stand clear of any metal or magnets, as they can disrupt the calibration process. This means using magnet-free accessories. Lastly, consider your surroundings. Some areas, especially those rich in iron, have irregular magnetic fields that can negatively affect your readings.
Inconsistent pin placement results from GPS drift, which refers to the difference between your actual location and the one recorded by a GPS receiver, like your smartphone. This discrepancy can stem from inadequate calibration or certain environmental factors that hinder GPS signals, such as trees and canyons. To address this issue, the Leupold Control App offers three location settings:
Best: Uses the GPS's smallest error band for the most accurate location.
Average: Combines multiple perceived locations for a more reliable estimate.
Static: Displays your current location and allows you to input GPS data from other mapping tools.
Your target may be too far away or your rangefinder is not stabilized enough. Long Range mode accurately measures the distance of targets out to 5,000 yards (about 3 miles). Anything beyond this range may not return a reading. The Long Timeout feature can also prevent the laser from reaching your target. Review your product settings and adjust the timer's duration as needed.
Make sure there are no walls or other obstructions between your smartphone and your rangefinder. If you continue to experience an unstable connection, toggle Bluetooth off, then back on.
When the rangefinder is not in use, we recommend performing a hard close on the app to terminate the bluetooth connection and save battery life. You can monitor your battery status in the app or directly through the rangefinder's display.
Click on the hamburger menu in the top left corner, then navigate to the "My Equipment" section. Your paired devices will now be visible. Instead of simply clicking on the device you want to disconnect, press down, and slide it to the left. This action will reveal a Bluetooth symbol and a trash can symbol. Clicking on the Bluetooth symbol will disconnect the device. If you click on the trash can, it will delete the device entirely. Once a device is deleted, you’ll need to go through the initial pairing process again if you choose to reconnect it.
