There was never a question about which rifle/riflescope combination I’d be taking on my early-August barren-ground caribou and arctic grizzly hunt in northern Alaska.

Knowing the harsh weather and geographic conditions I would likely to face, I went with the rifle/scope combo I’ve counted on for two and a half years on hunts around the globe: my trusty Gunwerks ClymR rifle in 7 LRM with a Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 scope. I’ve successfully used this rifle/scope combination on North American and overseas mountain sheep hunts and on big-game hunts in Australia, Argentina, and Africa. It basically traveled the world with me. You could say we’ve put some miles on.

Lightweight and compact, the rifle is designed for rugged hunts, hunts where ounces count, where I’ll be covering a lot of ground, and most likely in harsh conditions. It has an ultra-light stock and easy-handling 22-inch barrel - and it’s is super accurate. I’m confident on shots from 100 yards all the way out to, well, so far, my longest shot with it was 650 yards.

The caribou hunt is likely to be wet, but, who knows, one day it could be 82 degrees and sunny, and the next day, 38 and raining. No matter the weather, we’ll be hunting in it, either hiking or rafting, so a lightweight rifle/scope combo that’s impervious to the weather is essential.

I know Leupold makes bigger scopes, but the Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44 provides the clear, precise optics I need in a package that complements the light weight of my rifle. I don’t have any trouble throwing it on my back and hiking all day every day for a week or two weeks in any kind of terrain, and the accuracy of this combo gives me the confidence to make any shot I’m likely to encounter. With some of these game species, you may get only one crack at tagging out, and it may be a 450-yard shot in a crosswind, so you’ve got to have a rifle and scope you can rely on. I need a reliable heavy-duty scope that can live where I go, and I’ve learned over the years that Leupold makes that scope.
