Leupold & Stevens® Establishes Scholarship Program
BEAVERTON, Ore. — Leupold & Stevens, Inc., a company known for its commitment to American design, manufacturing and legendary product ruggedness, has created a scholarship fund for the Oregon Multiple Engineering Co-Op Program (MECOP) to support the next generation of innovators.
The newly established MECOP Leupold & Stevens Scholarship will be given to two MECOP students who meet standards of academic excellence, are a junior or senior, are Oregon residents, and have a proven passion for the outdoors. As the scholarship pool grows over time, so will the number of recipients.
Unique among cooperative programs, the MECOP is a partnership between Oregon State University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Portland State University and the University of Portland. This combined effort provides engineering students with a real-life working laboratory in which to gain hands-on experience.
“Leupold & Stevens is committed to American manufacturing, product innovation and true craftsmanship,” said Bruce Pettet, president and chief executive officer of Leupold & Stevens, Inc. “As such, we’re proud supporters of the MECOP program, and the next generation of engineers and designers that it helps produce.”
MECOP students earn a five-year degree, instead of the more traditional four-year programs. This extended education allows MECOP students to gain a better understanding of the theory and science behind engineering, while the mandatory two 6-month internships allow them to put the theory into practice.
Leupold & Stevens has been a partner with MECOP since 1992, traditionally hosting three to four students working at the Beaverton world headquarters. Currently, there are 10 MECOP alums working for Leupold & Stevens. In 2015, Leupold hosted four interns.
With almost 1,000 years of combined experience in its engineering team, Leupold & Stevens provides MECOP interns with a unique opportunity to experience American craftsmanship blended with modern manufacturing methods.
In addition, Leupold & Stevens’ engineer technicians average almost 14 years of service at Leupold & Stevens, and are testaments to the benefits of a commitment to American manufacturing.
